September 2024 Weather at Durham – Cool, Dry First Half, Wet Last Week

After a disappointing summer, we had all hoped for a September similar to the record one in September 2023. Alas, we were all to be royally disappointed. The gentle transition from Summer to Autumn never really materialised and leaves started falling earlier than we are used to.

In the first week, the temperatures touched the 20 degC mark on 3 days, but never reached the heights of the first week last year. There was then a very cool, wet period until the 14th of the month. The 8th-9th yielded 18.3mm or rainfall, with the bulk of that on the 8th.

The 14th to the 19th was mainly dry, with the daily max temperature hovering around the 20 degC mark again. The 17th was the warmest day of the month, but the maximum was disappointingly low at only 22.5 degC. The 20 degC mark was passed on only 5 days (compared to 11 in 2023, and 5 of those exceeded 25 degC).

Autumn kicked in with a vengeance soon after the equinox on 21st, and the last week was very wet, windy and depressing. The two wettest days were the 23rd (18.1mm) and 26th (51.1mm). The total on the 26th ranks with some of the wettest days i’ve recorded in Durham. It was the wettest day since 17th November 2022.

Overall, mean temperature was down by 2.8 degC compared to September 2023. The mean daily maximum was poor at only 15.9 degC (compared to 19.7 degC in September 2023).
