August 2024 Weather at Durham – Very Average Temps; Dry
Well, what can I tell you?
The summer hasn’t exactly been brilliant has it? After a stuttering start in June, and a mixed July, August was a little disappointing.
Don’t get me wrong, of the three summer months, August was steadier than the previous two. But it never really reached ‘high summer’.
The absolute maximum temperature was only 26.0 degC (August 2nd), but the mean max reached 21 degC and the mean min held up well at 13 degC. The month gradually deteriorated though as it went on.
The first half of August averaged 17.5C, with a mean high of 22 degC and mean min of 14 degC. The second half was cooler, but not cold.
I personally found it very comfortable, but others would probably disagree. The final average for August was 16.3 degC, about half a degree higher than last August.
It rained on 20 days in total, but the wettest (August 23rd) only yielded 4.1mm, and most were less than 1mm in showers.
What was noticeable was how windy it got later in the month. This was because of Atlantic Jetstream disruption by an old hurricane that got absorbed.
The last week featured a cool North Westerly flow, with wind speeds up to 55-60mph in places. See the two weather warnings from 22nd and 23rd (christened Storm Lilian).
