March 2025 Weather in Durham

March 2025 was a little above average temperature-wise. The Grassland temperature sum (the sustainable start of vegetation growth in Europe) reached 200 on March 7th 2025. This was 12 days later than the previous year, mainly due to the coldness of January 2025, which was on the colder side of average.

The mean temperature was pegged back a bit by the cool period 10th-18th March, with maximum temperatures staying in single figures from 10th-17th. Only 5 air frosts were recorded in March 2025, again slightly below average.

Rainfall was meagre, although it fell on 14 days, making it feel damp rather than wet. The total for the month came to less than 20mm. It’s nice to have a respite after such a wet couple of years. In parts of the south, totals of less than 5mm were recorded. In view of the fact that February 2025 was also on the dry side, Spring 2025 has the potential to be the driest since 2020.

The low rainfall totals were mainly due to pressure remaining high over the UK throughout the month. No major storm systems affected us and I was able to keep the garden gnome upright for more than a week.

Sunshine was high, and Durham University Observatory records indicate it to be the 5th sunniest March since 1881. The 26th was the 5th sunniest March day this century, with 11.4 hours of sunshine.

There was a partial solar eclipse visible from Durham on 29th March. The sky was partly cloudy, but the eclipse could be viewed through the cloud layer. It is important to never look directly at the sun during this kind of display.
