I have been increasingly discussing new UK daily records on Facebook. This year, as summer has progressed and the weather has become hotter, people are noticing. Here’s a list of new daily maximum records that have been broken this year. I’ll update it as the year progresses and write a similar post each year.
14th January 15.7C Cassley (Sutherland)
30th April 26.7C Wisley (Surrey)
1st May 29.3C Kew Gardens (London)
11th July 34.7C Astwood Bank (Worcestershire)
Here’s an interesting graphic from the Met Office, showing the number of days that reach 28 degC in each area in the climatic periods of 1931-60, 1961-90, 1991-2020 and the period 2015-2024.
They show how high temperatures, formerly experienced in the South East of England are expanding towards us here in Durham.
