Early in the month there was a strong storm on 4th (named Storm Floris). Trees in full leaf were down, mainly in Scotland. This was a very early unseasonable storm for August.
Temperatures held up well, and breached 30 degrees again on the 13th, with a peak of 31.5 degC. A cool spell then manifested itself between 18th-23rd.
Overall, 24 days reached 20 degC, which is a very respectable total. The minimum temperature for the whole month was 11.0 degC on the 28th. This is high, even beating August 2022 (10.6).
There was 8.8 mm of rain between 9 and 10pm BST on 11th Aug in Durham, from a thundery shower. The AWS at Durham Uni Dept of Geography reported a peak rate of 39.4 mm/hr at 9:38 BST. That’s pretty heavy by any standards.
Rainfall was a little more prevalent, but drought is still a problem. The total was 36.1mm, which came on 16 days. This was an almost identical total to July (36.7). The total for Summer was 104.4mm.
Wild fires have become a problem, with a big one later in the month on The North York Moors around Fylingdales. It took extensive efforts from many different fire brigades and local farmers to bring it under control.
Rain returned late in the month to help. A very active front from the West produced 13.4mm over 27th-28th. This was from the remnants of ex-Hurricane Erin being absorbed into the zonal pattern.
Notable in the second half of the month was extensive early leaf-fall. This is because leaves were so dry, and the high winds dislodged them.
Summer 2025 was one of the warmest on the CET Series, probably tied with only 1976 at 17.7 degC.
