January 2025 Weather in Durham

A little late this month, but here are the numbers for January 2025 in Durham.

It was the coldest January since January 2021 in Durham. Mean temperature was about 1.5 degC below the long term average. The spell from Jan 2nd-12th averaged just 0.1 degC.

5th January 2025 Snow

The 10th-11th was the coldest night nationally for 15 years, with -18.9 degC at Altnaharra in Scotland.

After no air frosts were recorded in December 2024, there were 12 in January 2025.

There was significant snow on 5th/6th, accompanied by an Amber Warning from the Met Office. When the thaw came there was appreciable flooding, but none in Durham thankfully.

On the 24th January, Storm Eowyn barrelled into the UK. The west coast and Ireland were badly affected, with windspeed reaching 114 mph in Galway. There was a Red Warning for the central belt of Scotland. The highest winds remained to the North of Durham, and only minor damage was done.

Although we don’t measure sunshine, it was recorded as a sunny month in the North.
