A severe gale, initially South Westerly, later veering North Easterly, triggered a major storm surge along the East coast of England and into the Thames estuary, where it was reported the highest since routine tidal measurements began. There was extensive coastal flooding and thousands of sheep were lost. A good deal of gale damage was recorded on land.weather station
