Much damage was wrought be a severe gale, South Westerly at first, veering North Westerly, across Southern England and South Wales. A feature was the extensive scorching of vegetation caused by the salt-laden wind sweeping in from the Atlantic. A major storm surge in the Bristol Channel damaged sea defences.
