: 9th-28th December. Widespread fog, London smog.
Thick fog affected different parts of England and Wales for several days at a time during this period. London was continually smogbound from the 19th to the 23rd inclusive, disrupting road, railway and river traffic. Over 400 ships, unable to reach the port of London, were forced to anchor in the Thames Estuary. The Daily Telegraph reported that the Chancellor of the Exchequer, unable to persuade any cabman to attempt the journey, was forced to walk from Downing Street to Euston Station.
