This Day in History: 1903-02-07

: 7th-8th February. Flood

Two days of heavy rain over South West Scotland and Cumbria resulted in severe flooding in Glasgow as the River Clyde overtopped it’s banks.Thousands of acres of land were submerged, in places to a depth of more than 3m, all road and rail traffic was suspended, and dozens of factories and mills were inundated. Some 6,000 workers were thrown out of work. It was the worst fled in the city for more than 100 years. Several rain gauges in the hills to the South and South West of Glasgow recorded 100-125mm.
