August 2025 – Warm, but not spectacular

Early in the month there was a strong storm on 4th (named Storm Floris). Trees in full leaf were down, mainly in Scotland. This was a very early unseasonable storm for August. It’s something I often find myself explaining to visitors on the Durham Weather website, especially when we’ve just had a spell of odd or extreme …

Is Net Zero “Virtue-Signalling Tripe”? – DCC think so!

Reform Members of Durham County Council

If governments choose to deny or abandon mitigation of climate change, things will almost certainly get worse—and quicker too. The planet isn’t waiting around while politicians argue. It responds to the laws of physics, not opinion polls or election cycles. Let’s cut to it. If mitigation, meaning cutting greenhouse gas emissions, is abandoned, then emissions will just keep rising. That …

The Grace Darling Storm – 7th September 1838

Grace Darling rowing out to rescue the sailors on the Forfarshire in 1838

The Grace Darling storm – it’s the storm that immortalised a young woman and her father as national heroes, and it’s forever tied to the wild seas off the Northumberland coast. The actual storm doesn’t always get as much attention as the act of heroism itself, but it was a ferocious one – typical of the savage gales that can …
